BOOKS

  •  Pink Floyd: a visual documentary Written by Barry Miles  Omnibus Press, 1980
This book was the reference work on the band for years. There are many quotes from the band, as well as a list of dates (almost to the day), accompanied by numerous photos, most of which had never been published before. However, the book is littered with errors. Some were not corrected in later editions.

  • Syd Barrett: The making of The Madcap Laughs Written by Malcom Jones, Private printing, 1988
In 1988, the former Floyd and Barrett producer published a book listing all the recording dates for the band's first period and Syd's two solo albums. With access to data from Abbey Road Studios, this book is a mine of information, particularly about the various recording sessions, and has cleared up ambiguities about previously unreleased tracks and alternative takes (putting an end to much speculation). As a first-rate witness, Mr Jones also provides a more accurate portrait of the former Floyd frontman, showing a more 'normal' behaviour than is usually portrayed in certain books where legend is often at odds with reality.

  • Bricks in the wall Written by Karl Dallas, Shapolsky Publishers, 1987.
A book that enjoyed some success when the band returned with 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason'. There are a number of errors here too, but it's a well-written book. The book provoked a furious reaction from Roger Waters, as the journalist took sides with the 'Gilmour gang'. There are photos and interviews with David and Roger

  • A saucerful of secrets: The Pink Floyd odyssey Written by Nicolas Schaffner, Harmony Books, 1991.
Certainly the best generalist book ever written on the band in fifteen years (before the release of Mark Blake's book). Correcting many persistent errors about the band, he also interviews people who have gravitated towards the group, drawing on a wealth of interviews given by Floyd members over the years. Although not necessarily complacent about the new version of the band, Schaffner incurred the wrath of Roger Waters for his scathing criticism of « Pros and cons … » and his reminder of the bassist's relative success as a solo act. The photos presented here are well known, indeed very well known Book

  • Pink Floyd Shine on Written by David Gilmour, Nick Mason & Storm Thorgerson, 1992.
The book included in the 'Shine On' box set, the band's first official book, features rare and previously unpublished (at the time) photos, as well as a reproduction of the lyrics. There are some errors, however, which is surprising given the book's official status. Book

  • Pink Floyd All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track. Written by Jean-Michel Guesdon & Philippe Margotin, Black Dog & Leventhal Edition, 2017.
A massive book written by two french authors who describe every song in chronological order. Some errors and some  aspects of the work were a little superficial (the authors did not have access to the original sources, such as the session sheets, and have reproduced information from here and there. Book

  • Learning to fly Written by Chris Welch, Castle, 1994.
A book that recycles information picked up here and there without correcting the most obvious elements (date errors, attribution of certain musical parts to the wrong authors, etc.). What remains is a fairly lengthy interview with Ron Geesin and a few photos Book

  • Pink Floyd Written by François Ducray, Librio Musique, 2000
A little book by his number of pages and by his ambition. Very negative about the post-Waters era Book

  • Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd Written by Nick Mason, 2005
A personal memoir (see this page to understand the reference) detailing the band's journey from its psychedelic beginnings to its peak success, including personal anecdotes and rare photographs. This 2005 edition includes updates on the band's reunion at Live 8 and the death of Syd Barrett is a memoir detailing the band's journey from its psychedelic beginnings to its peak success, including personal anecdotes and rare photographs. This 2005 edition includes updates on the band's reunion at Live 8 and the death of Syd Barrett Book

  • The complete guide to the music of Pink Floyd Written by Andy Mabbett, Columbia Press, 1995.
An almost complete index of all the band's songs in pocket format. Again, a lack of information and primary sources. Since obsolete  Book

  • Echoes: the stories behind every Pink Floyd song aka Another Brick in the Wall Written by Cliff Jones, Omnibus Press, 1996.
This work, which had the ambition of claiming to be the definitive book on the band, provoked the fury of David Gilmour, who explained himself in numerous interviews, describing it as a "swindle". It's true that there are a considerable number of errors in the book. Nevertheless, it seems that the context played a role: Nick Mason had just had his biography retracted (see this page, entry: The band shine on" Mason's book (1996-1997) ) and Ron Geesin had a bit of a falling out with David over the comparison made (unfavourably) by Jones concerning the main melody of the title Atom Heart Mother Book

  • Pink Floyd: A Kaleidoscope of Conundrums Written by Michael O'Neill, Danann Books, 2019
Another book with many know pictures. Dispensable.  Book

  • Pink Floyd : glorious torment Written by Sean Egan & Ian Shirley, Flame Tree Publishing, 2013
A kind of monograph about the key moments of the band. Nothing really new but some nice photos through. Book

  • Pink Floyd through the eyes of the band, its fans, friends and foes Written by, Bruno McDONALD, Da Capo Press, 1996.
Written by the co-founder of the seminal fanzine The Amazing Pudding, this is a compilation of scattered information that follows the band's career. An index of the band's songs with quotes for almost every track makes for interesting reading, although the structure of the book is rather loose and lacks consistency. Book

  • The rough guide to Pink Floyd Written by Toby Manning, 2006.
A good book that sets out to correct the factual errors found in previous works. Includes a biography, a list of the band's soundtracks and film collaborations, and a chronology.

  • Pigs Might Fly - The Inside Story of Pink Floyd Written by Mark Blake, Arum Press Limited, 2007
THE reference biography, with interviews conducted specifically for the book with the band's members and collaborators. A must-have Book

  • Pink Floyd: I was there, Written by Richard Houghton, Red Planet Publishing, 2017.
This book is part of a series of books compiling the testimonies of people who attended the band's concerts over the years (starting in 1966). The concept is very interesting, but the result is disappointing because of the lack of precise memories (if not marginal) from people who attended these concerts, sometimes decades ago. Errors are reported by these spectators (setlist, dates ....) and are unfortunately not corrected by the author. Essential reading.

  • Reinventing Pink Floyd - From Syd Barrett to the Dark Side of the Moon Written by Bill Kopp, Rowman & Littlefield, 2018.
The theme of the book is how the band recovered from Syd's defection and worked through the period leading up to the production of « Dark Side of ‘the Moon ». Apart from J. Shirley's interesting foreword, there's nothing new to report.

  • In the Pink (not a hunting memoir) Written by Nick Sedgwick & Roger Waters Music Overseas Ltd, 2017
To coincide with the London exhibition of 'Their Mortal Remains', Roger Waters decided to release one of the versions of Sedgwick's book, originally scheduled for release at the end of the 1974 tour (see this page). This is not the controversial version, but a redacted version of the manuscript co-written with Storm. Very interesting, it is in two parts: the first concerns the 1974 tour, while the second is devoted to Roger's private life in Greece at the same time. Many rare and previously unpublished photos.

  • Pink Floyd: Storie e sergetti  Written by The Lunatics, Guinti Editor, 2013
A wealth of anecdotes about the life of the band, many of which are familiar to fans. Rare information on the Italian concerts of 1968 and on the creation of three of the band's albums. An interview with Jenny Spires (Syd Barrett's former girlfriend) and a previously unpublished photo from 1965.

  • Pink Floyd  Written by Rick Sanders, Futura Publication, 1976
With privileged access to the band, Rick Sanders reveals intimate details and never-before-seen anecdotes about the members of Pink Floyd. One of the first books on the band. Some of the information is inaccurate, but this is a book that dates back to the band's golden era.

  • The Flaming Cow: The Making of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother Written by Ron Geesin, The history press, 2013
A superb book written by Ron Geesin that looks back at the creation, recording and performances of Atom Heart Mother with the musician's characteristic humour. Many previously unpublished photos and a wealth of previously unpublished information. Indispensable from the point of view of the band's history, and a pleasure to read.

  • Le livre du Pink Floyd  Written by Alain Dister, Jacques LeBlanc & Udo Woehrle, Albin Michel, 1978
One of the best books ever published on the band with hundreds of rare pictures and images

  • Pink Floyd in Japan: 1971/1988, Shinko Music Entertainment Co, 2021
The photographic archives of the Japanese rock magazine « Music Life » are being exhibited here for the first time (although some photos are missing). The number of previously unpublished or rare photographic documents is staggering. The text is rare. In Japanese.

  • Pink Floyd en France Written by  Patrick Ducher, Éditions Eclipse, 2021
The first comprehensive and very interesting book on the band's appearances in France. As well as a review of the Floyd's concerts, a study of the band's reception in the press at the time. Many rare documents.

  • Random precision: Recording the music of Syd Barrett 1965-1974 Written by  David Parker, Cherry Red Books, 2001.
This is a very interesting book for those who want to get into the finer details of the early career of the band and Syd Barrett. Many people were interviewed, including Peter Jenner and Andrew King.

  • A journey through time and space with Pink Floyd Written by Jon Rosenberg, Private Printing, 1988
Very interesting, but only for hardcore fans of the band.

  • The Pink Floyd Encyclopedia Written by Vernon Fitch, CG Publishing, 2016
An A to Z book with hundreds of informations from the main event to the tiny facts. The amount of details about the band’s gear is pretty awesome. A little outdated now  Book

  • Pink Floyd - The Press Reports, Vernon Fitch, USA Collector's Guide Publishing Inc, 2001
A collection of press reports as published in the contemporary newspapers Book

  • Embryo: A Pink Floyd chronology 1966-1971 Written by Nick Hodges & Ian Preston, Cherry Red Books, 1998
A book for hardcore fans of the band. A census of all the dates of concerts and recordings with a perspective on the sources of information. A useful, if sometimes somewhat inaccurate, book for biographers of the band but unreadable for ordinary fans.

  • The Complete Pink Floyd: the ultimate reference Written by Glenn Covey, Sterling Publishing, 2016.
An indispensable book, a reference (for once, the title doesn't lie). All the band's known dates are listed, as well as the recording dates for this edition, thanks to the author's exclusive access to the AIR and Abbey Road studio session sheets. A must-have. Impossible to miss if you're a serious fan of the band. Prefer the latest edition, which lists the recording dates.

  • Pink Floyd - The illustrated biography Written by Marie Clayton, TransAtlantic Press, 2010.
Un ouvrage qui ne vaut que par les nombreuses photographies du groupe même si beaucoup sont déjà largement connues des amateurs du groupe.

  • Madcap: the half-life of Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd’s lost genius Written by Tim Willis, Short Book, 2002.
Having consulted numerous previously unpublished archives, such as Syd's letters to Libby Gaudsen, and having interviewed people close to Syd, this book was the reference biography on the guitarist before the publication of Julian Palacios's «Dark Globe». A few annoying little errors here and there, but a very well-written book.

  • Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd: Dark Globe Written by Julian Palacios, Plexus Publishing, Limited, 2021
By far the best (and most comprehensive) book on Syd Barrett's life from childhood to death. A wealth of information, interspersed with numerous personal accounts, many of them exclusive.  Book

  • Crazy Diamond: Syd Barrett and the dawn of Pink Floyd Written by Mike Watkinson & Pete Anderson, Omnibus Press, 1991.
The first biography devoted to Syd, the book is rather weak both in its factual dimension (numerous common errors indicating that the authors did not rely on first-hand sources) and in its literary dimension (rather poor) Book

  • Syd Barrett : a very irregular head Written by Rob Chapman, Faber & Faber, 201
The other major book about Syd Barrett. Very well written. Many new facts Book

  • Pink Floyd in North America 1966-1983 Written by Glenn Povey, Wymer Publishing, 2022
This book is a meticulously detailed and well-illustrated chronicle of the band's tours, offering a comprehensive look at their North American journey. However, it lacks new or unreleased information, which may disappoint those seeking fresh insights.

  • Pink Floyd a Brescia - Il Concerto Written by Mirko Boroni, iberedizioni, 2021
The book is rich with firsthand testimonies and archival materials, effectively capturing the atmosphere and significance of the event. However, its niche focus may limit its appeal to only the most dedicated Pink Floyd enthusiasts

  • Pink Floyd - BBC Radio 1967-1971 Written by Ian Priston & Phil Salathe, Smart Bee Books, 2022
This book is an exhaustive and meticulously researched account of the band's BBC sessions, offering fans a deep dive into a crucial period of Pink Floyd's history. The book is praised for its unprecedented depth and the way it intertwines stories of triumph and loss with wit and pathos, making it a compelling read for both casual listeners and die-hard fans alike. However, its highly specialized focus might not appeal to those looking for a broader overview of the band's career.

  • Pink Floyd - The illustrated biography Written by  Marie Clayton, TransAtlantic Press, 2010.
This book is only as good as its many photographs, even if many of them are already well known to fans of the band.

  • Pink Floyd - An illustrated history Written by Patrick Humphries,  Chameleon Books 1997.
Once again, an interesting book for those who want to know more about the band's history. The textual material is, however, more consistent than the book referred to above.
