« Pink Blues » (Gilmour, Mason, Waters, Wright/1970)

Depending on their mood, the band would offer the audience a Blues based on one of the essays proposed for the film « Zabriskie Point » the previous year. This practice became more frequent on the 1971 and 1972 tours, though not systematic. The last time they performed such a track was during the famous final concert of the "In the Flesh" tour in 1977.

In this case, it was an attempt to calm the audience after a stormy concert. Anecdotally, the Floyd line-up changed on this track, with Gilmour deserting the stage and leaving the lead guitar to White!

Nick Mason :

« On le joue quand on en a envie. Le faire de façon récurrente n’aurait pas de sens ».

«Pink Floyd», Jean-Marie Leduc, 1973

Just another Twelve Bar Blues (uncrédited/1970)

There are still a few problems concerning the status of this track. For some, it's only a blues improvisation, as the band was wont to do in concert at the time; for others, it's the middle section of Biding my Time (reinforced by the fact that only an excerpt was recorded).

The first explanation is dubious, since the Floyd already played an identifiable blues one at this concert. What's more, if Just another Twelve Bar Blues was a cover version, its structure differs radically from the original. The second hypothesis can also be rejected, given the typical instrumentation of Biding my Time (trombone, trumpet and xylophone). Finally, it seems that the last time the band played Biding my Time was on January 24, 1970 in Paris. The most likely hypothesis is that this was a previously unreleased track based on an improvisation based on the framework of Biding ... After all, the bass line from Embryo (1969) was used on Moondhead (1969), Corrosion (1970) and then recorded as part of the Money break (1973)!

The presence of an unreleased track could be due to the fact that the band sought to market this concert (which was ultimately made impossible by the microphone problems that plagued the show).  The band repeated over and over again in the media that they were indeed unhappy with the live version of "Ummagumma", so perhaps they were looking to "correct the record".

Corrosion (uncredited/1970)

This is an instrumental that the band played from time to time in 1970 and 1971. It was sometimes used to introduce The Embryo. The title of the song was given by the bootleggers.

Nevertheless, a quasi-official version was played (albeit with a few variations) during a special program devoted to Roland Petit in 1970 on December 14, 1970. The last time it was played was at the Royal Albert Hall on February 7, 1971.

Atom Heart Mother (Reprise) (Gilmour, Mason, Waters, Wright, Geesin/1970)

Rarely played by the band, this instrumental was a variation on the title track. It was played as an encore, notably at the December 22, 1970 concert.  In 2008, during the "Atom Heart Mother" concert given by Ron Geesin and David Gilmour on June 15, this encore was played again!

No one tells me anything around here (uncredited/1970)

An unreleased song from the « Atom Heart Mother » recording sessions, developed during the June 13, 1970 session. Three takes were made for a total of half an hour.

Give Birth to a Smile Alternate Soundtrack version (Waters/1970)

Although released on Waters' first solo album, it can legitimately be considered a Floyd track. The film version differs greatly from the album version. See this page for more details

Ron Geesin :

CRUMBLING LAND (ALBUM VERSION)

« In a while I'll find the time to make the sunshine mine

In a smile I saw a single eagle in the sky

Wheeling, soaring, gliding by

On a hill there lived a man with many shining things

Shiny pool, a shiny car and shiny diamond rings

Wining, dining, shining king

And the eagle flies in clear blue skies

Breathing in the clear blue air

Back here on the ground another dealer coughs and dies

And fifty more come rolling off

The Ford production line

Then a man appearing like up in our on the sand

In his hand a moving picture of the crumbling land

Screaming, dealing, movie man

Here we go, hold your nose and see if something blows

Close your eyes, count to ten and see the sunrise rise

Climbing, high into the sky

Climbing all the birds a lake, a dove, the lies

On the finger of the king

On high the eagle spies the glitter of a gun

And wheeling in a climbing turn he flies into the sun »

COUNTRY SONG

« He made his way to the border

In the shadow under the trees

Down by a stream in a hollow

Turn your head, feel the breeze

And the red Queen was waiting for the news

For the white King to move

And the balance hung upon the head of one who tried

To stay within the shadows

And keep his undercover secret tight

They let him in by a back way

Into a chamber reserved for the Queen

She took the note that he gave her

Opened it slowly and started to read

Run to the treasury and bring me back some gold

Give it to the pawn who came, she cried

She says the white King thinks the game of chess is wrong

And all the courtiers crowded round

And this is what she told the gathered throng

Go to the store by the dungeon

Take all the red paint, take all the white

Make up a newborn colour

Cover your neighbour, we'll be all right

There will be no game today, she cried across the board

Everyday will be a holiday

And all the pieces cheered as tidings spread abroad

And the pink Queen sat

And smiled at the cat who smiled back ».
