1972-1973
Recording of « Dark Side of the Moon », the main milestone for Pink Floyd.

(This album changed) basically two things. First of all, it was the moment

when we had the greatest communion in the band: we were one band,

one spirit, one soul. But it was also the album that carried all the seeds of discord and decline

«Set the Controls for the Heart of the Floyd », Uncut Magazine, May 2007.

Dave is a great singer. He was a very acute and sensitive ear for harmony. A

lot of those double tracks and the harmonies where he sings through Dark

Side… (…) I sat back while he did that and he’d follow his instincts and produce these great harmonies. I was always somewhat in awe of that. It takes great talent to be able to do that, and it’s something that I really appreciate

«David Gilmour», Guitar World, February 1993.

Chris Thomas came in for the mixes and his role was mainly to sort out m

y and Roger's arguments about how the record should be mixed. I wanted The Dark Side of the Moon to be swampy, deep, with reverbs and stuff like that. Roger wanted something very dry. I think he was very influenced by John Lennon's first solo album ("Plastic Ono Band") which was very dry. We thought we should have a third opinion. We let Chris mix as he wanted, with Alan Parson as engineer. And of course, on the first day, I discovered that Roger had already joined in. So, on the second day, I went along too. But fortunately, Chris was much more sympathetic to my views than to Roger’s.

« (...) With « The Dark Side of the Moon », your triumph in 1973 ,

tensions began to grown between Roger Waters and you .. »
We can say that a democracy of principle existed until this point. And then, one day, Waters wanted us to recognize his prominent role in the band’s music. It was legitimate. But, until «The Wall», our arguments were constructive, beneficial for the music

«The Last Days of Pink Floyd », Uncut, June 2004.

One of my collaborations with Rick was Us and Them, which was a

fabulous song. This idea that I somehow stopped them writing is so patently ludicrous, I just don’t get how they could say that

«Interview w/. roger Waters », Q Magazine, Juin 1987.

(…) «Dark Side Of The Moon» finished the Pink Floyd off once and for all.

To be honest that successful is the aim of every group. And once you've

cracked it, it's all over. In hindsight, I think the Pink Floyd was finished as long ago as that

«Burning Bridges», Mojo, February 2021

But)I’m glad we didn’t break up after The Dark Side Of The Moon. Going

through all that pain we came up with some good work – Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall…

«Nick Mason, le batteur des Pink Floyd raconte ses souvenirs», Paris Match, 18 November 2016

After 'The Dark Side of the Moon' (...) I realised then that something had happened (...) Beyond the record, it was also a time when our lives changed. We were getting married, having children. Until then we had been together 24 hours a day

«A band is like a marriage, with multiple husbands»by Martin Stolz, Die Welt, November 2014

After 'Dark Side Of The Moon' it would have been best if Roger had left

the band. Only: then we would not have recorded 'The Wall'. Without us it probably wouldn’t have worked out the way it did. These tensions between us have always been good for our music. Just not for the musicians
