1976-1977
After spending 1976 setting up a complex on Brittania Row, the band recorded Animals, which also marked their return on the road. This album definitively confirms the emergence of Roger as the main force not only in terms of text but also in terms of concept and music.
He also takes over the visual part of the Floyd corpus by inspiring the Battersea’s concept

Early 1977. Pink Floyd had rejected our suggestion for their « Animals » cover in favour of Roger Waters' idea of a pig hovering over Battersea Power Station. We had serious misgivings about such a notion (shades of Monty Python and the Goodies -- was it not intrinsically silly?)

«Danger -Band Imploding», Mojo, December 1999

(…) Roger was very displeased with Storm, these are very old stories and I can't claim to remember every detail.

« Special Animals », Mojo, April 2017.

They did a bunch of ideas for «Animals» and i didn’t like any of them

So Dave, being Dave, said, «Well if you think you could come up with something better …» And me, being me, said, «Well I think I could… »

Rick Wright has no credit on this album and Davis is only credited for the music of one track. David is not the lead singer

«Le Soliste», Best, July 1978.

it's more because he wants to sing his lyrics. It happened once or twice a few years ago, I didn't want to sing his lyrics. But that was exceptional. On the contrary I would be happy to sing most of the songs but if Roger writes the lyrics, he wants to sing them and he sings them

«The third coming», Mojo, May 1994.

Roger's thing is to dominate, but I am happy to stand up for myself and argue vociferously as to the merits of different pieces of music, which is what I did on«Animals».I didn't feel remotely squeezed out of that album. Ninety per cent of the song Dogs was mine. That song was almost the whole of one side, so that's half of«Animals»

«The dream is over», Mojo, December 2008

Well, (I am) not as prolific (as Roger). One of the reasons for that is I’m a lazy bastard. Roger had - and probably still has - a huge amount of energy. He’d say, «I’m gonna sit down and write this» I was the kind of musician who’d say, «I’ll wait for tha inspiration to come». But I would think we were pretty equal in our share of the writing up in Animals

«The Man Behind Pink Floyd's The Wall», Greg Knot, 1999.

But I have to say Dave did some great work as well after «Dark Side».

His contributions to those latter records were very important

«Roger Waters Talks ‘Us + Them’ Film, », Rolling Stone, 30 september 2019

Dave and I never wrote together. I don't ever remember writing

with Dave. Sometimes he'd bring in a chord sequence and I'd then make a song out of it. Or he'd bring a guitar riff in and I'd make a song out of it, like 'Wish You Were Here.' I love that riff, it's fantastic. But we never wrote together, ever. Never. And Dave was never interested in drama, ever. In my experience. He never showed any interest at all, ever, in drama. Of any kind. Certainly not

«Back to the Wall», Rolling Stone, 30 September 2010.

If there were chord sequences there, I would always use them. There was no point in Gilmour, Mason or Wright trying to write lyrics. Because they'll never be as good as mine. Gilmour's lyrics are very third-rate. They always will be. And in comparison with what I do, I'm sure he'd agree. He's just not as good. I didn't play the guitar solos; he didn't write any lyrics

« Pink Floyd: The 25th Anniversary Special », Westwood One Radio, Mai 1992.

It wasn't one of the biggest, most productive periods of our lives I think.

We used those two songs, which were from 1974, changed their names and tweaked them to put them on the album. I love them, I love this album. It's exciting and loud and fun and there are some good effects on it but it's really not our creative peak

ended to be severely altered as a result of the recording sessions for the album

«Broken China», Q Magazine, August 1996.

It was 1977 and that was when Roger really began to start believing that he was the sole writer of the band. With regards to that album, it was partly my fault, because I didn't have much to offer. Dave, who did have something to offer, only managed to get a couple of things on there. I like my playing on the album, but it wasn't a fun record to make. Compared to, say, « Wish You Were Here », where we were really pulling together as a band - we had our disagreements but it was still a nice creative process – « Animals » was a slog. But I didn't have anything to offer, material wise, so I was in a difficult situation

«Shade of Pink », The Source, 30 August 1984.

« Animals »was in a way, the beginning of the departure of me from the Floyd, because«Animals»was Roger's concept, if you like, and I didn't actually write anything on«Animals». So I was just like Nick, playing the music»

«The third coming», Mojo, May 1994.

On «Animals» I was the prime musical force. Roger was the motivator and lyric writer

«Danger Démolition in Progress», Mojo, Décembre 1999.

I think he would tell you that I'd lost interest in the band -there are times around «Animals», where I would sit down with our manager and say, « I've got to leave this band, I can't stand the way Roger's being »,  but I wasn't really serious about leaving, though sometimes I wasn't happy

«The third coming», Mojo, May 1994.

Roger was in full flow with the ideas, but he was also really kepping Dave down, and frustrating him deliberately

«Roger Waters Talks ‘Us + Them’ Film, », Rolling Stone, 30 september 2019

For me (...)«Animals»signalled the end of the band as it had been before

«A Pig’s Tale: Roger Waters Traces the History …», Rolling Stone, 21 May 2008

I don't know what (the tour) cost. All that stuff that one does to increase

the theatricality of the rock & roll show ? It's all quite expensive. And we used to have quite heated discussions, shall we say, about that. Some of us didn't want to spend any money on any of that stuff. And some of us did. So it was always a cause for contention
