Interviewer: «Two years ago, you were ignored in France. How do you explain this sudden interest in your music today ?»
David Gilmour: « In England, our music was immediately accepted. As far as France is concerned, I think it's a problem of promotion, of publicity. This interest is certainly due, in part, to the fact that we wrote the music for « More », which was a success in France. And then 1| it's normal that we're more popular where we perform regularly. Our first shows in France were only six months ago, I think.»
Interviewer: «Musically speaking, what has More's music done for you? »
David Gilmour: «Oh, a lot of satisfaction. It was easy, quick and instinctive work. In eight days we had written, composed and recorded the album »
Interviewer: « Why did Barbet Schroeder choose Pink Floyd? »
David Gilmour: «I don't know. I don't remember, I don't think I ever asked him »
Interviewer: «And Zabriskie Point ?»
David Gilmour: «That's very different. It was very hard work. Antonioni had requirements about exactly what the music we were composing had to be, he explained what we had to do! And we had to follow his instructions. Every time we wrote a theme, we submitted it to him. If it didn't suit, we'd start again. It took an enormous amount of time... Michelangelo Antonioni is a strange character, difficult to understand... »
Interviewer: «What do you think of the increasing use of Pop Music in film?»
David Gilmour: « Making a film that is topical, that takes place in our time, today, requires the music of today. Today's music is Pop Music ... »
Interviewer: « What is your music? It's folk-wagnerian, in « Ummagumma », Take up the stethoscope and walk is very different from lnterstellar Overdrive, which is from « More » in general ...»
David Gilmour: « Our music? But it's all that at the same time. What we feel, we write! So it's impossible to put a label on our music »
Interviewer: « So where does it come from? »
David Gilmour: « It's the culmination of experience gained in life, by four boys who are 25... »
Interviewer: « I've seen you on stage, in the intimate setting of Théâtre 140 in Brussels, then at Festivals like Amougies, Rotterdam... It wasn't the same show. Why? »
David Gilmour: « We don't like to do the same things in different places. And then, above all, it depends on the venue, the audience. The way we feel about them.»
Interviewer: « What do you feel or, more precisely, what do you express on stage? »
David Gilmour: « Tverything we have to say we say on stage. As far as our music is concerned, I can only say one thing. Listen to it. If you don't understand it, then listen to it again, and listen carefully.»
Interviewer: « What are your plans for the future? »
David Gilmour: « My plans? Our plans? I can't tell you. You might get some surprises, you'll have to wait for that to happen... »
Interviewer: «ADo you have a new LP in the pipeline?»
David Gilmour: « Yes, it will be out in a couple of months, in September... I don't have any titles to give you... »
Interviewer: «Will we see you in France this summer? »
David Gilmour: « Yes, of course. We'll be in the south of France for three weeks, from July to August for five Festivals »
