ROGER WATERS « Ein star rechnet mit seinen lehren ab! », Bravo, 19 February 1981.
Interviewer: « Roger, you are the creator of « The Wall ». Is it true that you have worked on your own youthful experiences ? »
Roger Waters: « It is the story of a boy from my generation, much of which I experienced myself. The boy loses his father in the war, is so alienated from himself and driven into isolation by his overprotective mother, the school and the teachers that he ends up inciting the audience with fascist slogans as a rock singer. The Trial, his spirit reckons with his life so far and he decides to overcome his isolation »
Interviewer: « Did you really have to suffer under such evil teachers that you had to portray the teacher as a horror doll in the show? »
Roger Waters: « I don't want to criticise all teachers across the board, but at my school there were a few cruel fellows who treated the children very badly Their method was always to beat people up, to force them into dull discipline instead of encouraging them to do something »
Interviewer: « What is the significance of the giant hornet that appears in Young Lust ? »
Roger Waters: « She symbolises a prostitute that many boys dream of during a certain phase of puberty. On the one hand they long for a woman, but on the other they are so afraid of this dangerous creature that they never come into contact with one. This makes the boy even more insecure and isolated »
